Legal Mumbo Gumbo

We do not have the history of previous owners. Even if we did, we could not release that type of personal information anyway, due to privacy acts.

That day, September 30, 2012, seemed to prove invaluable. The information and photos that Wayne Midkiff provided, the in depth conversation with previous owner, Peter Gale, and now another potential lead. According to Gale, "I sold it to John Simonsen (who owned Western Corvette at the time)."

I do not hesitate. I phone Western Corvette. The receptionist informs me that John Simonsen has not owned the company since 2006. I push her a little further to find out if she can give me anything ... contact information or maybe even Simonsen's previous auto records? NOTHING! This is not going to deter me. I know the answers are out there. I can taste them.

Back on the web, I look up Western Corvette and find out the name of the new owner. A Mr. Lawrence Block. Lawrence purchased Western Corvette in 2006. He has been in the automotive repair business since 1989, when he bought Calgary Tune-up & Corvette. When Western Corvette was purchased he merged the two companies. Lawrence has been involved in the Corvette hobby for 35+ years. He has autocrossed and been a part of the Corvette club in Calgary, Corvettes Unlimited, almost since day one.

I send an email to Mr. Lawrence Block explaining my search and information request making certain to inform him on the "finds" to date.

David,

Peter Gale is currently out of the country but I will forward this to him today. As for the registration history, I can only do that for the province of Alberta & will attempt that in the next day or so. Dueck's is still in business in Vancouver & I believe there are still some people there that may have knowledge of the car. Another source of info for this car may be Gary Yorke @ Classic & Performance in Delta, BC. I have taken the liberty of copying him this email.

Lawrence,

Western Corvette Service & Performance

From his email, I realize that Lawrence did not know that I had already been in touch with Peter Gale. No loss.

I press on. I email Gary Yorke at Classic & Performance in Delta, BC as well as Dueck Dealerships in Vancouver, BC. Not knowing whom to send the email to, I forward the email request to nine different departments of the auto dealership.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have purchased the following vehicle, 1964 Corvette Coupe, VIN # 40837S100315, AK License #GED165, for the purpose of a complete restoration.

As part of that restoration I would like to trace its history through all previous owners, back to its date of manufacture and delivery to you the dealer Dueck on Broadway , Vancouver, BC (Shipped Sept. 23, 1963).

I am requesting a title search back to the time the car entered Canada. Copies of titles would be preferred if your system allows. However, any information as to owners, dates of transfer, cities/towns, etc. will be appreciated.

Fees required for such searches will be remitted in any way you request, and I will be happy to sign any applicable non-disclosure agreement.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

We receive multiple e mail replies from administrators of Dueck Dealerships in Vancouver, British Columbia.

David,

We do not have the history of previous owners. Even if we did, we could not release that type of personal information anyway, due to privacy acts.

Dueck on Broadway is now a holding company and ceased operation many years ago when it was purchased by a new owner. There are no retained records available and, even if there were, in terms of ownership documents, they would not divulge them.

I’m sorry but our records don’t go that far back in time. Are you a member of the Victoria Corvette Club? They might be able to help.

Striking out, I send a Vehicle History Search Request to: Insurance Corporation of British Columbia

I receive a reply from our ICBC Vehicle /Owner Information Request.

Based on the information you provided, you could request photocopies of the Transfer/Tax Forms showing any transfers of ownership of the coupe for the last seven years. However, due to Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation in BC, any personal information contained on these forms would be blocked out.

If you want to make a request, there would be a fee of $10.00CDN per copy, and you may send it in writing to:

If you wanted to know the approximate number of transfers of ownership during the past seven years so that you would have a better idea of how to make out a cheque, you could call our Driver Testing and Vehicle Information Services.

Due to Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation in BC, we are not in a position to provide personal information in response to a vehicle ownership search. Also, records from 1960 to 1980 have been purged from our databases, so information going back to those years is most likely not available.

10/09/2012

Again I reply to the ICBC for information.

I have a partial list of owners in 70's and 2001 to current.

This vehicle was bought 1963-64 in Vancouver, BC and then lived many years in Calgary before going back to BC and then 2001 Seattle, then 2004 Anchorage, AK.

What do you suggest I do to find the gaps in ownership?

10/09/12

ICBC answers my question?

Given the information you provided in your most recent email, you might want to contact Service Alberta and the Washington State Department of Licensing to find out if you can request ownership searches for the time the vehicle was in their jurisdictions.

10/09/12

I immediately send an e mail a Auto History Request to the DMV of Alberta, Canada.

10/10/12

We receive a reply from the Canada DMV.

The following information is found on the VIR:

1. The date and time that the report was printed.

2. Vehicle

3. Odometer Reading

4. Vehicle Status.

5. Vehicle Registration - registration information will tell you the date Alberta Registries first entered the vehicle's data in its records, the vehicle's current license plate classification and registration history and the dates of registration. This information is also provided for the seven most recent registrations, based on information available since December 1993. Please note that the name of the last registered owner will not be released due to the confidential nature of this information.

6. Lien Information

If you have further questions please contact:

Ministry of Service Alberta

UHG!!! I am beginning to feel like Charlie Brown! The information the Canada DMV will provide is virtually useless in our ownership history search!
